Hoaching was located in Canton, a flourishing port/city in South China. Prior to the Treaty of Nanking (1842), export trade was confined to the port of Canton.

Maker Information:
Hoaching is most easily remembered and recognized for his unique mark which was a Lombardic H. This mark is often referred to as the “Hoaching H”. Hoaching was a very sizeable shop that was noted by contemporary patrons as having very high quality ivory carvings. Also recognizeable for his red label often seen on the boxes of items from his shop (pictured below).

Hoaching was known to employ/use various different workshops/ shop marks. Known workshops/ shop marks are as follows:

  Ch’eng Chi, Cheng Ji, or Ching Kei     I Ch’ang, Yi Chang, or I Ch’eung  
  Hsi, Xi, or Hei     Kuang Sheng, Guang Sheng, or Kwong Shing
